Youth Camp Volunteer Roles 2019

Support Roles

Support roles for camp are vital to ensure that camp runs smoothly and everyone has a great time!  Shift work is involved in most of these roles and many are easy to pair together if you’re looking for a few different tasks throughout the week(s)!  

The different support roles have varying degrees of responsibility, time commitment and types of work.  Volunteers of all genders and abilities (musical or otherwise) are encouraged to apply!

Front Desk

The GRCS front desk operates from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm each day.  This position is in charge of assisting parents and guardians sign their campers in and out of camp each day, helping with the day 1 registration process, doing some admin work, selling tickets for the Saturday Showcase, and various other tasks.  This job is highly eclectic! Multiple shifts are available – sign up for as many or as few as you like!

Monday – Friday: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm (can be split into multiple shifts)

Snack Team*

Help with snack preparation, keep volunteers caffeinated (and kids un-caffeinated!) help with kitchen clean-up, make everyone happy by keeping them nourished. May involve some errands: pick up food donations, do supply runs, etc. This position is supervised by the Food Coordinator.  Shifts are flexible – sign up for as many or as few as you want!

Lunchtime Supervisor

Do you like awesome music? Comfortable around kids? Short on time but still wanna help out? Perfect! We need a few folks to hang out with the campers during lunchtime while local musicians and bands serenade and entertain you! It also allows volunteers a chance to eat lunch too!

Monday – Friday: 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

Gear Crew*

Gear Crew is absolutely vital to the success of camp. This crew will set up, break down, and move equipment throughout the week.  Responsibilities include setting up the camp site, re-configuring rooms for band practice every day, helping with load-in/out on showcase days, etc. Familiarity with musical equipment is a plus, but not required. Must be able to lift at least 20 pounds on a regular basis throughout the week.

Please note, extra shifts may be added as identified by the Gear Coordinator.

Monday – Thursday: 11:45 am – 1:15 pm and 3:45 pm – 5:15 pm

Gear Coordinator

The Gear Coordinator is responsible for coordinating all aspects of musical equipment and Gear Crew for camp. This includes securing and managing gear rentals (including picking up and returning gear to rental location – access to a van or a truck is a plus!) and coordinating movement of gear during camp at the venue and the showcases. The Gear Coordinator should be familiar with musical equipment and should be available for the majority of at least one camp week, but don’t necessarily need to be there all day, every day.

Showrunners*

This is a new youth volunteer position, restricted to past campers ages 15 – 18, who have technically “aged out” of camp.  Showrunners will engage with campers at the start of the day before official programming begins, and will plan and run assemblies. This position can be supplemented with additional support roles. This team will be coordinated and supervised by the Showrunners Coordinator.

Photographer

Document Rock Camp Saskatoon! We need experienced photographers to capture the action at camp– specifically to shoot band portraits, volunteer and camper mug shots, general activities, and the final showcase.  All images used for our website, Facebook page, and promotional materials will be credited. During camp we ask that photographers shoot all aspects of camp in a respectful and non-intrusive way. Experience shooting band portraits and live events a plus. This position will liaise with camp administrators during camp session. There is scheduling flexibility with this position; you can sign up for as many or as few shifts as you want.

**This position must supply their own equipment.

Showcase Volunteer*

Come to the Saturday showcase and watch campers show off their new skills!  Showcase volunteers will be tasked with various jobs, such as selling merchandise, transporting gear, and general camper herding.

Showcase Director(s)

This position has a flexible schedule and can be shared. Showcase directors ideally have some experience in event planning and will oversee the running of the Showcases, including distributing tickets to volunteers, organizing the event programs, ensuring instruments/lyrics/equipment is set up, and ensuring the event runs smoothly. This position can be task-heavy or largely directive – as long as the work gets done!

Craft Coordinator

The Craft Coordinator works with the Programming Committee to plan craft activities for the campers to partake in during camp week.  Activities include creating posters, signs, buttons and various other forms of beautiful GRCS swag that decorates the halls during camp week! Craft Coordinators are not expected to be at camp and will partner with the Band Aids to operate the craft area during camp week.

Set Up and Clean Up Crew

Unsure of exactly how you can help out during camp week?  We will need some folks to help set up for camp each Sunday before camp begins and help clean out the venue once both weeks of camp are over.  This is a great addition to any of our other support or mentor roles!

Drivers

Girls Rock has campers from all over Saskatoon. Drivers are required to help with picking up campers before camp and dropping them off after camp is done. This position is an excellent choice for volunteers who are already headed to camp for the day or for volunteers who cannot volunteer during camp hours.

Mentor Roles

Individuals in mentor roles work directly with campers to help support and teach them throughout the week.  Certain roles require musical experience while others do not. These roles are reserved for individuals who identify as female, trans, two-spirit and gender non-conforming.

Instrument Instructor*

Instruments offered at camp are: electric guitar, bass guitar, drums, keyboards and vocals.  Instrument instructors should have experience with one of the instruments offered at camp. Each instrument will have two instructors working with a small group of campers throughout the week and instructors should be comfortable working in a team. Please be aware that many of the campers will have little to no experience with their instrument. As such, it is important that instructors create a supportive space for learning. Teaching styles and goals should reflect this need.  This role’s schedule and qualifications align well with the the Band Coach or Band Manager positions; taking on simultaneous complimentary roles for one camp week is possible (and amazing!) but entirely optional.

Band Coach

Each Band Coach works with a group of 5-6 campers. The Band Coach helps the band with playing their instruments, songwriting, tech support and working as a group. They are responsible for helping their band prepare their song for the Showcase Concert. It is ideal for Band Coaches to have experience with songwriting and more than one instrument. Each band’s Manager and Coach work closely together to support their group throughout the week. This role’s schedule and qualifications align well with the Instrument Instructor position; taking on simultaneous complimentary roles for one camp week is possible (and amazing!) but entirely optional.

Band Manager

Musical experience NOT required! Each band manager works with a group of 5-6 campers. Band Managers are mentors who support and encourage campers throughout the week. Band Managers should be comfortable handling group dynamics, conflict and group decision making. They will also be responsible for the safety of their band and making sure the band is where they need to be at all times. The Band Manager and Band Coach work closely together to support their group throughout the week; while the Band Coach focuses on the musical aspects of being a band, the Band Manager focuses on teamwork and collaboration.This role’s schedule and qualifications align well with the Instrument Instructor position; taking on simultaneous complimentary roles for one camp week is possible (and amazing!) but entirely optional.

Band Aids

Band Aids work with campers to provide support for emotional or behavioral issues, help with problem solving and conflict resolution.  Experience working with youth is an asset. Ideally, Band Aids will be available for the duration of camp week to support campers throughout their experience, however shifts can be flexible.

Showrunners Coordinators

This new position will mentor and coordinate the Showrunners team before and during camp to come up with programming and activities for campers at daily assemblies and support them with their other duties throughout the week.
